Gonzales in trouble as tide turns against Team Texas

The title of a memo from the US attorney-general’s chief of staff concerning the plan to fire eight US attorneys could not have been more prescient: “Preparing for Political Upheaval”.

Kyle Sampson, the aide who wrote that memo, paid for his role in the fallout from the scandal with his job.

Now his boss, Alberto Gonzales, is under increased pressure to resign and has resorted to the defence of a hapless executive, unaware of what was going on in his own office. “I was not involved in seeing any memos, was not involved in any discussions about what was going on,” he explained at a press conference on Tuesday.
