A memo written by an Army officer whose name was withheld reveals a powerfully honest assessment of the Iraq fiasco from someone who is really there. Needless to say, it is a story very different from the one we heard in Bush’s “surge” speech. What is striking is how clearly our combat troops understand the political agenda, and the fact that success or failure in Iraq – whatever that means – depends on the political piece much more than the military piece. Heartbreaking in a way, uplifting in a way – this is another opportunity to genuinely ‘hate the war, but love the soldier’…BS
