Lessons for One Last Try

By David Ignatius | Thursday, January 11, 2007 | The Washington Post

The “surge” in American troops in Baghdad, announced last night by The Decider (basically ignoring the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group – is anyone surprised?) will happen under a new commander for the Iraq war, Lt. Gen. David Petraeus. Petraeus was the lead author of a new joint field handbook for both the Army and the Marines on counterinsurgency, published last month (there is a link inside the Ignatius article for those who want to download it). It’s fascinating reading, because it distills a contemporary senior military commander’s assessment of strategies that will and won’t work in struggles like the one our troops face in Iraq. The chapter headings reveal some very novel thinking, such as: ‘Some of the best weapons for counterinsurgents do not shoot’…BS
