Greek rescue an exercise in ‘cat-herding’ – Alan Beattie (FT)

The chaotic way the EU has handled the Greek mess is a disgrace and really makes one doubt the viability of the Euro. Thank God we in the UK kept out of it. At the moment the UK GBP has been devaluing its way out of the crisis, which of course the Greeks can’t do as they are stuck in the EUR. The Germans are not being very nice to them either with nasty racial/cultural feelings of superiority starting to show publicly. Greece could easily become ungovernable and Spain, Portugal and Italy are in hot water too. Ireland, which was also in deep crisis has handled the situation admirably, they took it on the chin, did not moan and winge and demonstrate in the streets and made all the cuts in public spending you could ask for. Their bonds have soared – it can be done.
