A Tainted Victory – Clive Crook (FT) on Healthcare Reform

I am not a US resident so I stand to be corrected but I don’t think that CC is right when he says that Obama and the Democrats rammed this bill through against unanimous Republican opposition and the majority of the country. The majority of the country is consistently misinformed by an overwhelmingly right wing mainstream media as a result of which many people apparently still believe that Obama is a muslim, the Health Care reform bill will involve death panels and a communist takeover of the US and that Sadaam was responsible for 9/11. Do the majority of Americans really still believe this or just the noisy ones and/or those bought and paid for by the pharmaceutical and insurance industries? To say that Obama + Pelosi did not try to be bi-partisan is not entirely fair either. The current Republican Party is so right-wing and so unprincipled (to my cyncial European eye) that they weren’t prepared to cede an inch. Rep. Boehmer sounds truly demented and regurgitates the logic and mindset of of the anti-Civil Rights lobby in the 60s. I honestly find it extraordinary that in the most advanced country in the world, in the 21st Century, people could still be coming up with arguments on healthcare that were discredited and discarded in Europe 70 years ago. Or is it just about the money?
