Outsiders’ Advantage

The growing Presidential campaign of Barack Obama should look carefully at the campaign of Massachusetts Governor-elect Deval Patrick, who is the first Democrat to hold the Governor’s seat in 16 years in this bluest of blue states. Patrick is only the second African American to ever be the governor of any US state. Patrick and Obama have much more in common than the color of their skin. Both have star quality and are thrilling public speakers, but it’s much deeper than that politically. The methods Patrick used to defeat established and better-funded incumbent opponents and to win the confidence and optimism of Massachusetts voters are a powerful example for Obama. The politics wonks among us will also note with great interest that Patrick’s methods also have historical roots: they are an Internet-savvy, contemporary version of the voter outreach strategies Jack Kennedy used in both his Senatorial and Presidential campaigns.
