I could not agree more. Turkey is a vital ally for the West in helping us to understand Islam and the Middle East and to help contain islamic terrorism. They are also superb soldiers and good people to have on your side in a tight corner. We should remember that the Ottomans ran the show in the M.E. for centuries and understand the arab mentality better than anybody. I sometimes wish that we had not kicked them out in 1917/18.

In fact the EU is pretty divided on the issue with the UK, Irish, Spanish and Scandics largely in favour of Turkish accession and the French (for demagoguic/populist reasons) and the ex-Habsburg bloc (memories of the janissaries at the gates of Vienna), and the Greeks (history and Cyprus) are against. Nothing quite measures up to Bush’s criminal folly in invading Iraq but to reject Turkish membership of the EU would certainly be a disastrous mistake.
