Firedoglake: Did Harry Reid Use The Public Option To Punk The Democratic Base?

There’s a letter going around the Senate (written by Dem senator Michael Bennet of Colorado (!! .. who the heck is this guy?!) and co-signed by Sherrod Brown (OH), Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), and Jeff Merkley (OR) … and with a growing list of more co-signers) that asks for the public option to be passed thru reconciliation .. Jon Walker at FDL reports that Reid’s response is tepid …

If the public option with a state opt-out was only a few votes shy of 60, it should clearly have at least 50 votes for passage by a reconciliation measure that can’t be filibustered, right? What Reid’s spokesman now appears to be saying is that the public option doesn’t have even 50 votes in the Senate.
