Nancy Reagan Supports Stem Cell Bill
By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
Nancy Reagan is urging the Senate to pass a bill to expand federal financing of embryonic stem cell research. In a letter to Senator Orrin G. Hatch, a Utah Republican who is a leading backer of the bill, Mrs. Reagan complains that “the wait for United States Senate action has been very difficult and hard to comprehend.” The May 1 letter, to be made public today by the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research, an advocacy group, concludes, “There is just no more time to wait.” The chief Senate sponsor of the measure, Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, said he had been negotiating with the Republican leader, Bill Frist of Tennessee, and expected to reach a deal by the end of this week.
