Romney’s Dance to the Right

By Joan Vennochi | Sunday, November 26, 2006 | The Boston Globe

Mitt Romney, outgoing Massachusetts Governor, is morphing before our eyes into a Republican Standard Bearer in the run-up to the 2008 Presidential election. Smarmy, two-faced, mendacious pandering to the audience, in other words, and powerful efforts to cover up the record of his tenure as Governor at a time when the first laws supporting same-sex marriage were enacted. This piece, by veteran Romney-watcher Joan Vennochi of the Boston Globe, points out some really juicy hypocrisy in the career of this former “compassionate conservative”, including his pandering to the GLBT community in this bluest of blue states.

I love this stuff. I can’t help it. I’m a Washington kid, born and raised and marinated in politics and backstabbing and public displays of human absurdity. And though it sounds like an odd mixture, I was also raised to worship with my whole heart the flip side of all that: the inspiring leaders, the high ideals, like service to mankind, equality, motherhood, food for the hungry and indeed All Great Causes, one reason I felt so thrilled and grateful to have made it into the Washington cast of HAIR. But still, like all Real Washington Natives, I love a good scandal like a junkie loves his dope, and this one is pure candy…BS
