Remember ABSCAM in 1980? John Murtha does. Ruth Marcus does. Nancy Pelosi has seemingly forgotten about the fact that Murtha was indicted but not charged in a corruption sting run by the FBI. Aside from the fact that Murtha’s opponent in the race for House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has worked hard for the #2 job in the Democratic leadership and done all the thankless back-stage preliminiaries for years; aside from the fact that Pelosi backing Murtha instead of Hoyer gets the new Democratic House leadership divided right away with a public slap in the face; besides all that, Ruth Marcus thinks that Murtha’s involvement in ABSCAM makes him highly suspect as a guardian of the clean government promised by Democrats in the wake of massive Republican corruption.
