One of the best things about hotly contested elections like the one six days from now is the way major news sources bring out their political analysts for the long view of how current events fit into larger patterns. One of the very best is Harold Meyerson of the Washington Post – every bit as ‘historical’ as Daniel Schorr, now of NPR, but 30 years younger. This piece traces the rise of the right wing of the Republican party back to the New Deal, and it identifies the moment when Republican fortunes turned ascendent in the South: when LBJ signed the Civil Rights Bill into law. There’s lots more, but I won’t spoil it for the reader. All I will say is that it’s a great read…BS
