    THANK YOU, Michael! Fascinating history with a disturbing message for America. Should be required reading for all, including our new President. I fear he’s been persuaded to commit the US and its allies to a “surge” that will curse his administration like Vietnam cursed JFK and LBJ and progressives in general in the sixties. I hope that he has read and understood history’s message, beautifully articulated in this essay: there can be no painless or brief or safe solution in Afghanistan, the gravedigger of empires….WOW…bs
