People like Ellsberg (and former CIA analylst Ray McGovern) are calling for a new round of whistle blowers before it’s too late… Before “shock and awe” in Iran.
[Senator Morse] was telling me, it seemed, that it had been in my power, seven years earlier, to avert the deaths so far of 50,000 Americans and millions of Vietnamese, with many more to come. It was not something I was eager to hear. After all, I had just been indicted on what eventually were twelve federal felony counts, with a possible sentence of 115 years in prison, for releasing the Pentagon Papers to the public. I had consciously accepted that prospect in some small hope of shortening the war. Morse was saying that I had missed a real opportunity to prevent the war altogether.
Powerful stuff … not the kind of responsibility some of these career civil servants bargained for when they signed on … but if you haven’t drunk the Kool-Aid and you own a conscience – if you have any kind of empathy in your heart – whadya do?… blow the whiste or do nothing…go to jail or do nothing… sleep at night or do nothing.
