To start with, the writer proceeds from the assumption that even “Al Qaeda=9/11” is correct. My views on this are well-known.
However, let us assume that the he is correct. There is still the matter of how Al Qaeda – and the Taliban – came about.
It is sad that so few people know their history. Otherwise, they would know that the U.S. CREATED the Taliban (and, in turn, Al Qaeda) when it began providing support (arms, intelligence, advice) for the mahujadeen in Afghanistan after Russia’s invasion there. Indeed, for many years, OBL was a C.I.A. “asset” – the person WE put in charge of a large part of the mahujadeen movement. The Taliban was a direct outgrowth of our support – and Al Qaeda was a direct outgrowth (at least partially, if not largely) of our failure to “follow up” there, but rather abandoning the opposition (and Afghanistan in general) once Russia conceded.
And there is evidence that at least some, if not most, of the 9/11 hijackers were C.I.A. assets (and, in fact, that OBL never STOPPED being a C.I.A. asset).
Ultimately, the writer is correct, since 17% of Americans still believe that there was a connection between Saddam and 9/11 after that claim was repeated ad nauseam by the Bush administration. So, yes, someone – perhaps many people – will believe it.
PEace.
