A gripping and very graphic piece of writing by England’s former ambassador to Uzbekistan. Murray lost his job after complaining through official channels about shocking abuses and routine use of torture, in an atmosphere of pervasive dishonesty under the Soviet-appointed “president”, Islam Karimov. The CIA and MI6 were using highly suspect data obtained under torture in a system perpetuated by major financial backing from the US and the UK. After his forced retirement, Murray wrote a book about tirture in Uzbekistan that was heavily censored by the UK government before publication. Here he hints at some of what is in that longer work.
