Furore at Westminster over MPs expenses fiddles

Our (UK) MPs from all parties are being pilloried for the way in which they have been gaming the expenses system. They have been careful to do nothing illegal but there is a distasteful seediness about the whole thing, which has infuriated the public during these straitened times. The press has been particularly sanctimonious and hypocritical and emerges from the whole affair with little credit. Instead of introducing ever more complicated rules, which smart people will always find ways of bending and feel justified in doing so, why cannot we go back to our grandfathers’ rule of thumb when contemplating some course of action – “Would I like to see this made public?”?
It is pretty simple really.
The article below from Philip Stevens in today’s FT is worth reading.
