  1. Ian Alterman said:

Dr. Michio Kaku – a nuclear physicist who was in the first “team” to enter TMI after the accident (and my physics professor at CUNY) – was the one who “blew the whistle” on the actual extent of the damage: it was Dr. Kaku who first alerted the country to the fact that it was not just a small accident, but that it came much closer to a “China Syndrome” than the government and the utility company were leading the public to believe.

Dr. Kaku’s courageous leadership in this regard led to others on that “team” speaking their minds freely instead of towing the company (or government) line.

It should be noted that it was largely the events of TMI – and the truth brought out by Dr. Kaku and others – that led to the non-opening and eventual dismantling of the planned Shoreham Nuclear Plant on Long Island (a cause in which I was actively involved, including getting arrested for jumping the fence at the plant with 700 other people – the “last straw” (final action) that led to the plant’s dismantling).

    Peace.
