One historical footnote not mentioned is that, in perhaps the most extraordinary example of life imitating art, the film “The China Syndrome” was released in theaters exactly twelve days before the TMI accident.
Thus, the public eye was focused on the nuclear power industry at that exact moment in a way it would not have been without the film (and the run-up media campaign to it).
