NYT: Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

In “Gov. Palin’s Worldview” (editorial, Sept. 13), you superbly expose the dangerous view held by the McCain-Palin ticket that thoughtfulness, knowledge and experience are handicaps in today’s difficult world.

But I question whether or not such a naïve and perilous view originates with the candidates. Rather, and on a darker note for our country, do the candidates and their handlers instead merely reflect the attitudes of so many of our citizens?

For the last three and a half years I have repeatedly tried to understand how this country, with so many great strengths, could re-elect a president whose policies and practices were based on distortions, ignorance or false beliefs. Despairingly, I have concluded that it is the fault of the American people.

Too many citizens don’t want thoughtful analysis. Instead, they want simple solutions and instant emotional gratification. This is what the McCain-Palin ticket now offers.
