Revolution in Egypt .. Middle East cont (5)
protesters calling today the Day of Departure .. don’t hold your breath – though looks like Mubarek’s Operation Camel Mayhem didn’t cut the mustard as today was largest day of protest yet in Tahir, with masses of people gathering outside of Cairo as well – Mubarek told Christaine Amanpour that if he left Egypt there would be chaos, though i think he means not so much chaos in Egypt but chaos in the rest of the region (and he may be right) – Iran’s Supreme Leader unhelpfully said that a victory by the protesters would be a “great defeat for America” .. meanwhile the NY Times reports that good ol’ America is working on getting Mubarek out and passing the reigns to the VP guy Suleiman, who judging by his ridiculous interview with Egypt state TV where he blamed the media for the last 2 days of violence is just another stooge – Democracy Now reports “Suleiman has close ties to the U.S. military and the CIA. He was trained at the U.S. Special Warfare School at Fort Bragg and has been described as the CIA’s point man in Egypt for the secret extraordinary rendition program” – David Dayen at Firedoglake has a good take on the NYT article where he says, “So to sum up, the US has a plan, nobody in the Egyptian leadership agrees with it, they doubt it would work, they doubt it’s even possible, and they won’t meet with US envoys anymore” – this whole deal is not near over – mab .. watch Al Jazeera live video feed
