In point of fact the writing was on the wall for us 1919 and actually I think the British have managed pretty well in managing our relative decline over the past 90 years, accelerating since the end of WW2. We have pretty smart people thinking our options through and I think that the very fact of being British gives one a certain racial self-confidence (I am not talking about colour but about being British), which helps us to muddle through. Whether this self-confidence is justified on philosophical grounds is another matter but in the practical matter of physical survival I guess it is helpful. We you expect, au fond, that your country will be OK in the end, not because you have more military muscle but because you believe your core values are right, then, in the end, you usually are OK.
