Robert Meeropol: Julian Assange, My Parents and the Espionage Act of 1917

Meerpol is the son of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg ..
The 1917 Act has a notorious history. It originally served to squelch opposition to World War I. It criminalized criticism of the war effort, and sent hundreds of dissenters to jail just for voicing their opinions. It transformed dissent into treason. Many who attacked the law noted that the framers of the Constitution had specifically limited what constituted treason by writing it into the Constituton

From politicians (mainly Republicans), that meant you got your money for nothing and your tax cuts for free" (Krugman); "As members of the baby boom generation begin to turn 65, they may need to re-examine the notion that 'age is just a number'" (Guest Op-Ed); "Two philosophers argue for living life by riding the unexpected whooshes that come along, whether at a sporting event or at church" (Brooks)

The United States, Israel and the Arabs: Please, not again | The Economist

For well over 50 years I have been on this warning. Of course our national industry WMD's must keep selling to all sides. They for sure will want the clients to use their new armaments-more sales. mb

IMPORTANT – Jane Hamsher and Glenn Greenwald Take on Wired Magazine and Adrian Lamo (the Hacker/Mental Patient Guy Who Dropped Dime on Bradley Manning)

The Feds are trying to use Lamo's unreliable memory of his alleged chats with Manning to get Assange on an espionage charge -- so Glenn and Jane (god bless them) are going after Lamo and his buds at Wired magazine who are refusing to release the full chat logs -- at issue is Lamo's changing story as he makes the rounds in various media to tell his odd tale of engaging Manning in online chats, which strangely began (in one dubious Lamo tale) after Manning randomly found him by googling "Wikileaks" -- now that the Feds are going after Assange via Lamo, all gloves are off -- Glenn has a (MUST READ) post entitled "Wired's refusal to release or comment on the Manning chat logs" about Wired's role in all this -- Jane posted "Citizen Journalism and the Lamo-Manning Chat Logs" (another MUST READ) about Wired editor Evan Hansen defending himself by changing the subject and attacking Greenwald w/out directly addressing any of Glenn's criticisms -- Jane also compiled all the published chat logs between Lamo and Manning as well as transcripts from every Lamo media interview (w/help from an all-volunteer FDL-reader transcriber contingent) -- so basically a whole lot of stuff to read and familiarize yourself with on an unfolding and fascinating/disturbing story - mab

Obama’s Fear of the Reagan Narrative

a very valid fear as the selling of anti government rhetoric by Republicans, ie Reaganism has been well done. The Democrats have done an abysmal job of having a counter slogan. Nor have they come up with a new positive motto of their own.mb
