Alexander Cockburn: Sotomayor and the Last of the WASPs

Very funny .. "If Judge Sonia Sotomayor is confirmed, the US Supreme Court will consist of six Catholics, two Jews and precisely one white Anglo-Saxon Protestant in the form of Justice John Paul Stevens, who is 88 years old and boasts of two important WASP insignia: inherited wealth and a bow tie. He also thinks that Shakespeare’s plays were written by the Earl of Oxford. But then, so does Antonin Scalia. The other WASP among the nine, until he announced his retirement – thus paving the way for Sotomayor’s nomination – is David Souter. The two WASPS have been the most liberal members of the court" .. read more

Jeremy Scahill: When Gibbs Attacks

In light of the Telegraph story about rape at Abu Graib, Obama spokeman Gibbs went for the "make fun of the British media" method of denial, rather than address the source of the story, Gen Taguba .. Scahill writes "Hey, Gibbs, here's a suggestion: [rather than the British media] go after Gen. Taguba, a 34 year, decorated military veteran whose career was brought to an end for battling Rumsfeld and the torture machine at the Pentagon. Go after the General who last year (when Bush was still in power) called for prosecutions of the torturers" .. read more
