Greg Palast Likes the Stimulus Package .. All in All a Good Day

go to story
"Frankly, I was worried about this guy. Obama's appointing Clinton-droids to the Cabinet, bloated incompetents like Larry Summers as "Economics Czar," made me fear for my country, that we'd gotten another Democrat who wished he were a Republican. Then came Obama's money bomb. The House bill included $125 billion for schools (TRIPLING federal spending on education), expanding insurance coverage to the unemployed, making the most progressive change in the tax code in four decades by creating a $500 credit against social security payroll deductions, and so on. It's as if Obama dug up Ronald Reagan's carcass and put a stake through The Gipper's anti-government heart. Aw-RIGHT!" - Palast

It’s post-inauguration now. It’s all about the issues. And one issue at hand is every American’s God-given right to television reception" (Collins)

NYT Op-Eds (4)

"The Democrats have created a stimulus package that is a sprawling, undisciplined smorgasbord. By trying to do everything all it once, the bill does nothing well" (Brooks); "Why has the Obama administration been silent about one of the key promises during the campaign — the promise of guaranteed health care for all Americans?" (Krugman); "Real cooperation between Democrats and Republicans on Social Security could pave the way for bipartisan bliss" (Ponnuru); "For Geert Wilders, a Dutch parliamentarian and film maker, who calls for a ban on the Koran to act as the champion of free speech is a bit rich" (Buruma)

Glenn Greenwald: Increasing even-handedness in the Middle East

go to story
"Only time will tell whether the appointment of [George] Mitchell presages real change in U.S. behavior, but whatever else is true, the presidential appointment of a Middle East envoy with a real history of even-handedness, and who therefore prompts praise from the likes of Jimmy Carter, J Street and Noam Chomsky, and anger from the ADL and The New Republic, is a significant and encouraging departure from the suffocatingly one-sided approach that has been so destructive for both the U.S. and Israel" - Greenwald

Medical Marijuana Raid Raises Question: What’s Obama Policy?

go to story
The Jan. 22 raid near the California-Nevada border occurred two days after Obama took office and before the new president's own Justice Department team was in place. The raid resembled many conducted during the Bush administration, but seemingly clashed with Obama's campaign opposition to such tactics. "I think the basic concept of using medical marijuana for the same purposes and with the same controls as other drugs prescribed by doctors (is) entirely appropriate," Obama told Oregon's Mail Tribune newspaper in March. "I'm not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on this issue." - McClatchy news report
