"An Italian member of the European Parliament is not the first person you expect to meet in Charleston, South Carolina, but there was Monica Frassoni last week following the twists and turns of a remarkable U.S. election. When I inquired what brought her to Dixie, Frassoni, a Green, responded: 'We’ve learned that a good or bad U.S. president can make the difference between war and peace. A good or bad Italian prime minister makes no difference at all.'"Posted by Ian Alterman, Thursday, January 31, 2008

NYT Op-Ed (Kristof): The Dynastic Question
"Two families in the Oval Office for 28 years?" I still think this entire issue is a non-starter. As Kristof begrudgingly notes, "The counterargument goes like this: As voters, we should always choose the best person for the job. We should evaluate candidates on their own merits and not drag in their families. We punish ourselves if we spurn the best person because of his or her family background."Posted by Ian Alterman, Thursday, January 31, 2008

"Do you have a license for that radiation detector?" Intro 650 is a growing concern here in NYC. It would give the NYPD complete authority over when and even whether "independent testing" of air, water, etc. can be done by anyone other than the government. Simply put, if this potential law had been in place in 9/12/01, the NYPD could have prevented ANY independent testing of the air - and we would never have known that the government was lying when they said on 9/13, "The air is safe to breathe."Posted by Ian Alterman, Wednesday, January 30, 2008

NYT: Overhaul, Make It a Venti
Compared to the subprime scandal, the housing crisis, and other front-page economics issues, this may not seem like much. However, when three of the biggest food service multinationals (Coke, McDonald's, Starbucks) all report weak, flat, or flat-out poor quarter earnings - with McDonald's warning of more to come, and Starbucks closing U.S. units and re-organizing itself - attention should be paid.Posted by Ian Alterman, Wednesday, January 30, 2008
Matt Taibbi: The New Nixon [i.e. Hillary]
go to articleShould've posted this sooner when it came out last week .. more great Taibbi stuff like - "[Mark] Penn is the Democratic version of Karl Rove. He even looks like Rove, only he's fatter and more disgusting. Up close in a forum like this, his eyes bulge out of his fat, blood-flushed head; his neck spills out of his too-tight shirt collar; and he generally looks like Jabba the Hutt, his suit bursting at the seams, with only the bowl of snackable live toads suspended at arm's length missing from the picture" - mab

Tom Hayden Endorses Obama
go t article"Barack Obama is giving voice and space to an awakening beyond his wildest expectations, a social force that may lead him far beyond his modest policy agenda. Such movements in the past led the Kennedys and Franklin Roosevelt to achievements they never contemplated. (As Gandhi once said of India's liberation movement, 'There go my people. I must follow them, for I am their leader.') We are in a precious moment where caution must yield to courage. It is better to fail at the quest for greatness than to accept our planet's future as only a reliving of the past. So I endorse the movement that Barack Obama has inspired and will support his candidacy in the inevitable storms ahead" - Hayden
