The calamitous war in Iraq has given birth to a new kind of warfare. The term ‘improvised explosive device’ makes one think of a crude Rube Goldberg style gizmo, but for the last year, over 100 times a day, one of these increasingly sophisticated weapons is either discovered or exploded, frequently producing a massive, armor-piercing blast with horrific loss of life and mutilation.
