Foreign Affairs: America’s Next Foreign Policy
Substantial essays by Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and John Edwards. Extremely worthwhile reading. As an aside, Giuliani's "realistic peace" sounds suspiciously like American hegemony. [N.B. If the links do not work, please let me know and I will "trade up" for the essays themselves.]Posted by Ian Alterman, Friday, August 31, 2007

go to blog post"Once upon a time, it was easy for the American Right to smear its opponents on the left -- they could simply equate them with the nation's communist enemies. It didn't matter that the American "left" had more in common with the Right than international communism, the smear was useful. Now, however, our international enemy -- Islamic radicalism -- is actually the polar opposite of what liberals stand for -- their actions on women rights are deplorable, they insist on theocracy, they loooveee torture and the death penalty, they demand to control the culture (TV, movies, music), they rail against rampant sexuality, they seek to spread their ideology via force, and they have a well-defined black-and-white sense of truth. Remind you of a certain American party?" - Kos

Standing Up To Corporations One Town At Time
go to articleDoug Pibel in YES Magazine tells how small towns and cities are fighting the Wal Marts and water privatizers and industrial polluters when all else fails. "...in Humboldt County, California, the people passed a referendum banning outside corporations from participating in elections and declared that corporations are not recognized as people there. Blaine Township, in southwestern Pennsylvania, outlawed the destructive practice of longwall coal mining. People in Montgomery County in rural Virginia are fighting the taking of farmland to build a giant railway terminal. These are admittedly radical steps, although, as Ruth Caplan points out, they are being carried forward by people who are not radicals. 'These are not liberals, not progressives, not activists. But they don’t want corporations to tell them how they should run their community.'"
