“[re Last Scene] So here is what I found out. The guy at the bar is in the credits as Nikki Leotardo. The same actor played him in the first part of season 6 during a brief sit down concerning the future of Vito. Apparently, he is the nephew of Phil. Phil’s brother Nikki Senior was killed in 1976 in a car accident. So the point would have been that life continues and we may never know the end of the Sopranos. But if you pay attention to the history, you will find that all the answers lie in the characters in the restaurant. The trucker was the brother of the guy who was robbed and killed by Christopher in Season 2. (the DVD players) The trucker had to identify the body. The boy scouts were in the train store and the guys at the end were the ones who tried to kill Tony and only clipped him in the ear (season 2 or 3). Absolutely incredible! There were 3 people in the restaurant who had reason to kill Tony and then it just ends.”

The discussion on the HBO Sopranos community site has been overwhelmingly negative, with most saying they are cancelling their HBO subscriptions, and others calling for death and destruction upon Chase and the writers. But I think this is selfish, and sour grapes.

The episode was brilliant. From the opening shot of Tony’s face in repose as he awakes to “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” (a clue to the ending?) to the closing shot of Tony’s face as he looks toward the door, with “Don’t Stop Believin'” playing (another clue?), this was among Chase’s best writing and directing jobs, and a perfect capper to the series.

That he brought together almost everyone throughout the series who had a beef with Tony (if not a reason to kill him) only makes it more brilliant. Yet given the history of the series, I doubt that Chase would have permitted the murder of the entire family; besides, that is simply not how it happens (or is even “allowed” to happen) in the mafia. Killing Tony in front of his family? Possibly. But, again, given the history of the series and Tony’s ability to “survive,” I believe “something” would have happened at the last moment to prevent his being killed.

I had always thought that the best, most appropriate ending for the series would be for Tony to be sitting by the pool as some ducks fly overhead and land nearby. This would have been the exact reverse of the first episode, in which the departure of some ducks “causes” his first fainting spell, and he begins therapy with Melfi. Indeed, I almost thought Chase was going to do this when Tony was sweeping the leaves by the pool a few scenes before the end.

Kudos to Chase & Co. for giving us the most fabulous television series in the history of the medium.

    Peace.
