BEIJING: Americans must obey Chinese laws
and regulations while in China, the
government said on Friday, rebuking five
US tourists for holding a banner
supporting Tibet’s freedom near Mount
Everest.

Foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao
condemned the “separatist activities” of
the tourists in Tibet, saying China has been
in contact with the US government over
the issue.

The Americans had unfurled a banner
calling for the independence of Tibet on
Wednesday. The tourists have been
ordered to leave the country. “The Chinese
government and people cannot tolerate
any attempt to split China,” the
spokesperson added.

“The Chinese government has asked the US
to remind its citizens they must obey
Chinese laws and regulations while visiting
China,” Liu said.
