The Myth of the Middle

Alan Abramowitz, Professor of Political Science at Emory University, and Bill Bishop, a political writer based in Austin, performed a survey to correlate attitudes on a large variety of current issues with one’s party of choice. They found that the overwhelming majority of Americans are either solidly liberal (usually voting Democratic) or solidly conservative (usually voting Republican). Based on their answers, they found only a tiny population that was truly independent in their views. The conclusion: the partisan split in Washington is driven by an equally wide split in the population. We are a politically polarized country, and most of us are either fundamentally liberal or fundamentally conservative, just like our elected officials…BS
