DVD Review: Who Killed the Electric Car
California gave a mandate to the car companies back in the mid 90s to have 10% of the cars on the road be “zero emission”. As a result GM produced a car called the EV1 which was an amazing vehicle: fast, quiet, innovative, convenient (you don’t have to fill up at gas stations, you charge the car at home and at work), cheaper to run and CLEAN – no emissions!!! And can be run in part on solar power.
Well – surprise, surprise – oil companies and car companies (Chevron, Exxon, GM, Toyota) fought the mandate tooth and nail and when fuel cell technology came around (a far less convenient and more expensive technology than plain electric) the various federal and state committees did a bait and switch and killed the mandate…And here’s the funny part: instead of letting people keep the thousands of electric cars that were already on the road, they only let “consumers” lease the cars and then after the mandate was killed they made people give the cars back. Then they trucked all the electric cars out to the desert and demolished them.
Highly recommend you go rent or buy this DVD documentary .. if only to see that all the talk about corn ethanol, hydrogen fuel cell and coal into synthetic fuel as a way make the switch from gasoline is just that .. talk. The technology is already there, ready to use, easy, convenient, not 5, 10 or 20 years away. The infrastructure exists to make this change NOW!! So write letters to your governor, congressman, state rep and ask for electric cars.
