This front page piece from The Washington Post was written by two Post staff writers who focus on intelligence and defense issues. Clearly they have read much more of the National Intelligence Estimate than the three mangled pages the Bush White House proposes to release. They say,
“The overall estimate is bleak, with minor notes of optimism. It depicts a movement that is likely to grow more quickly than the West’s ability to counter it over the next five years, as the Iraq war continues to breed “deep resentment” throughout the Muslim world, shaping a new generation of terrorist leaders and cultivating new supporters for their ideology.”
The piece then goes on to analyze about a half dozen sub-plots within the document, and the furor it has provoked, despite the fact that prior intelligence people describe it as “pretty mainstream stuff”…BS
