I like Rocky Horror.

I was late in the game turning on to it. It was with the movie, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." It must've been 1977. Richmond, Virginia. A group of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhists took me to see it. Good guides. Clued me in to all the audience participation aspects of the full experience. Nice "virgin" experience. The Buddhists also took me to see "Rock and Roll High School" with The Ramones. Is it any wonder I have an affinity for Buddhism?

I also, as was apparently Claude Hooper Bukowski, a sci-fi film-ophile. And Rocky Horror starts:

Michael Rennie was ill
The Day the Earth Stood Still
But he told us where we stand
And Flash Gordon was there
In silver underwear
Claude Rains was The Invisible Man

All sci-fi stars I remember from my '50s youth.

Claude sings:

I fashion my future on films in space

Anyway, yeah, I like Rocky Horror.

>My first memory of Rocky Horror was the day my friend, Animal came by and
said, "Get dressed! You've got to see this show!"
She had already seen it earlier (I think it was in previews on Broadway) and
was crazy about it and knew I would love it too.
We walked over and entered the theater to find that tables and chairs had
been set up like a nightclub. Oh yeah! This is going to be good!

We sat off to the side and read the program where I discovered that a
friend, Graham Jarvis was playing the Inspector and Richard Kim Milford was
cast as Rocky. (better & better...) ...and some guy named Tim Curry in the
lead. (not sure if Meatloaf was in it at that time--please forgive my poor,
battered memory...)

Then came the opening and Animal & I lost it when we heard "Science
Fiction"! (We were Home, Baby!!)
During the entire show we went nutz--we got all the jokes and danced along
with the songs--just like I did at Hair--it was GREAT (and I'm talkin' Tony
the Tiger GRRRRREAT!!)

If any of you have been to a good Star Trek and/or Sci-fi convention, you
know that the audiences are very uninhibited and responsive--that's what
RHPS felt like and we responded!

Afterwards, we went backstage to say hi to Graham and while waiting in the
foyer, the actor who played Frankenfurter came downstairs, stopped, pointed
at Animal and me, smiled and said (still in character)--"You two were just

Marr-vellous!!!" and continued on his way.
What a wonderful compliment! We would always remember the name of Tim Curry
after that!

BTW- at a west-coast Costume Convention (like a Trek con but all costumes,
all the time), around '82 (?) a masquerade entrant devised her own special
Rocky Horror costume which consisted of the standard corset, black hose &
high heels and a black "bag" that covered her to her hips and featured
a
huge pair of luscious red lips on it which the wearer operated to lip-synch
"Science Fiction" and finished with a large tongue
"wetting" the lips. The
audience went crazy and she won "Best Science Fiction Costume".

good times....
