Hi Rebecca,
glad you like the photos!

I know all about deadlines, have been scanning Nigel Olsson (Elton John's
drummer)
all day, am getting crosseyed by now, although he used to be SO cute!
maybe still is???
(and you know what they say about sights for sore eyes - ha!)
this was taken in a Detroit hotelroom, probably before the show at the
Easttown Theater, Nov 28, 1970...
I'll have to go to the fanpages to see what he looks like today.

oh, by the way, the pictures I sent are in 72dpi, for the book you will
need 300 dpi,
or the reproduction will be bad. What about the dissertation?? How is that
printed?

OK, am getting some sleep now too

Dagmar--
Thank you so much for sending the photos, they are so awesome!
I am so lucky to have made contact with you!
I am racing my deadline, still making some changes in order to graduate,
and will send you a copy once I've settled down and gotten some sleep!
Where shall I send it?
I'll also send the formal permission at that time, even though it's a
little ass-backwards at this point...
And of course, just to reiterate, obviously if this is ever published (and
I hope it will be)
as a book, we'll have to negotiate a fee for you for the use of the photos.
Thanks so much,
Becca

hello Rebecca,
 how's the dissertation coming?
Did you get the picture from Lincoln Center?

here are two versions, the first one with Donna Summer!
You can really see the one dress there, as they are stepping away from each
other.
The other one with Melba Moore and Mary Davis is not as obvious -yet!
I would really like a copy! Thank you. it doesn't matter if it's heavy.
How many hours of work are in it??
If - or should I say WHEN - you do do the book eventually, I will need to
get a publication fee.

let me know how its' coming along. deadline about now?

Dagmar

That is SO NICE of you. I really appreciate it!
I will of course credit you, and if you really want a copy,
I can send you one, but I have to warn you it's something of
a 400 page doorstop, not a really riviting read! I could just send
you the chapter on HAIR and West Side Story, or I could
send you a copy of the book when I turn it in to one.

The final copy is due in two weeks, so I'm cramming!

Hello Rebecca,
OK, but even if it is "only" used in your dissertation, you MUST put a
photo credit there. (photo by Dagmar) Please.
And I have another request: can I have a copy of the dissertation?

When do you have to hand it in?

Dagmar

Dagmar,

I am sorry about the spam-blocker confusion! I fished your
email out of the spam holding bin, and have been composing an answer which
goes as follows:

Of course I realize you are a professional photographer! You are totally
famous!
I know you can't just "give out" photos, and if I ever should publish this
as a book,
of course I'd be looking to pay for the right to use the photos. For now,
I AM looking
for a freebie, since it's basically for me and my advisor to look at, and
it sits in a library
at
my school, and should be covered under "fair use" or "academic use" or
something
like that.
Obviously, I would only do this if it was something you were ok with, which
is why I'm
writing
now! I'll put together a formal request and attach it to another message,
or send it to
you,
if simply letting me use the photos for my dissertation is something you'd
even
consider. If not,
I won't use them, and I'll find another way to represent the number I'm
discussing, and
I'll
get back to you when it's time to make it a book!

Thanks so much,
Rebecca Rugg

Hello Rebecca

sure it's OK to ask me anything!
 ;-)

I have a question in return:
you realize that I'm a professional photographer, do you?
I can sell you photos, but can't just "give them out".
and yes, I do have a shot of the three girls in one dress.
A takeoff on the Supremes!

My fax is:
 520-742-1766
but emails work fine too.

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Dagmar

Hi Dagmar,

I am a doctoral student at the Yale School of Drama, writing my dissertation
on musical theater and American nationalism, and I have your email from
Michael Butler's archivist at the Hair website.

I had written them trying to see about permission to use one of the photos
on the site, a photo of the "White Boys" number, and they said you took the
picture and you hold the rights to it.

So I'm writing you to see first of all, if there is a fax number or an
address where I can send you a more formal permission request.

Also, though, I wonder if you have other images from the show, particularly
from this number in it, that might work: the copy I have from the "Hair"
website is pretty lame. In my diss, I talk about the moment in this number
where the women revealed that they were all wearing one dress -- I've never
seen a photo of that moment, but would LOVE to include one, if it were
available.

Hope this is all ok to ask, and that it's not too much trouble.

Thanks in advance,
Rebecca Rugg
