Program;Intergenerational Juneteenth Program
Intergenerational Juneteenth Program


Every year Austin celebrates the Emancipation Proclamation birth in Texas 
with a series of events celebrating Juneteenth. None of them top the 
Intergenerational Celebration, a gathering of numerous people of all ages and races at 
Rosewood Park on June 18, 2001.

Stella Roland, of the Texas Emancipation Juneteenth Cultural & Historical 
Commission, and Denise DeLaPena, from Fox 7 Sports, the emcees of the day started 
the festivities. Rosemary Castleberry welcomed the audience on behalf of the 
Parks and Recreation Department. The children of the Summer Playground Program 
were in awe of "Body Talk", a dance group. The children had many other 
amusements besides the actions of the entertainment stage.

Kids walked around with Krispy Kream hats, and where did they get them? The 
booth with the long line! Everyone got the chance to dip his or her doughnut in 
chocolate and colorful sprinkles. Another popular site was coloring their 
free T-shirts, which were made possible by Dell Computers. H.E.B. held their own 
little carnival, which earned participants tokens. These tokens earned toys 
and other prizes provided by H.E.B. In the shade of the trees even more 
amusements delighted the children. Everyone took turns getting fake tattoos, face 
painting, blowing bubbles, and many other activities. Everyone who attended the 
Intergenerational Celebration walked away with smiles on their faces with more 
memories of Juneteenth.
