Google is a mega brand, like Nike and so many others. It is not the best, it is the most popular because of it's branding. It unlike others is watching what you are searching so in their words improving their performance. What ever, I do not like that, my searches are my personal inquires, as redundant as they may be.

When I go to a library and withdraw a book a record is kept, so that the inventory is managed and if I am irresponsible the book can be tracked if not retuned. But when I'm in the library and am looking around or am reading without leaving with the material that is normal privacy and therefore no tracking necessary. So if I go into Google a free space should I not have privacy?

again what ever, Google tracks so i do not use it.

Try using Copernic http://www.copernic.com/ rated by US and Canadian Universities as the best search engine.

There is a free version and then paid versions for really drilling down to published papers etc... as to vocation/industry interests. i.e. Medical/Legal etc..

not as pretty as google i.e. logo, but so much better. Really good toolbar for quick access to ............

www.dogpile.com is fun, it is a meta engine using the popular sites and sources very well as to your inquiry, unfortunately Google is a member of their search group.

http://www.ask.com/ or Ask Jeeves is another to look at other than Yahoo or MSN, again a better layout and toolbar.

It is all about choice, but at the end of the day they are only as good as to how well you ask your question/search
