[Mb-civic] Attacks' Legacy: Simmering Fear - Washington Post

Yes, 9/11 created an atmosphere of fear - which, of course, the Bush Administration cynically manipulated in order to ram an illegal war and the neocon agenda down the throats of the American public.

However, the question behind the question remains: what actually happened on 9/11? Was it "terrorists?" If so, who? Since five of the 19 named hijackers were seen alive and well with their families a year after the attacks, there is at least some incorrect information. (And, by sheer coincidence, the two airports at which most of the alleged hijackers trained were owned by CIA operatives.)

But what about the evidence - or lack thereof? There is evidence to support the theory that Flight 93 did not go down because a group of patriotic passengers decided to try to wrest control from the hijackers. Rather, there are multiple eyewitness accounts of a military craft in the area just moments before the plane crashed. And during his Christmas 2004 visit to Iraq, Donald Rumsfeld accidentally let slip that the plane had been shot down - and then claimed the following say that he had "misspoken." So, re Flight 93: Bravery? Or military action?

As for Flight 77, there is more evidence to support the theory that it was not a plane that hit the Pentagon than there is to support the theory that one did. There was no wreckage. The hole made by the alleged plane was far too small for a Boeing 757. All c/c video of the event in the area - from the Pentagon, a gas station, a hotel et al - was quickly commandeered by the FBI and never released. So, re Flight 77: Boeing 757? Or something else?

As for the WTC, go back to the original broadcasts of the event as it was happening and you will find that almost every reporter on the scene and every anchorperson in the studio reported hearing "a series of small explosions" just prior to the collapse of the south tower. And watching the videotape at that moment, and you will see debris flying outward from the building at high speed - which is exactly what occurs during a controlled demolition. The building also fell at "free-fall" velocity - despite a center core of quadruple-wide solid steel beams - which only occurs during a controlled demolition. And the center core - which should have remained standing even had the concrete floors "pancaked" as alleged - literally "disappeared": it does not even show up in the official graphics of the 9/11 Commission report; it's as if it never existed. Yet it did. And the only thing that could have brought it down - and shredded it - was explosives.

We already know for a fact that WTC7 was taken down by a controlled demolition: owner Larry Silverstein stated it unequivocally in a 2002 interview. Yet given that it takes days - sometimes weeks - to set the charges for such a demolition, this means they were in place before 9/11: the building came down only 8 hours after WTC 1 and 2, and the charges could not have been placed in only 8 hours - especially in a building in which there were two fires. [N.B. Just by coincidence, WTC 7 not only housed the "command post bunker" that Giuliani had had built at the cost of tens of millions of dollars, but also housed the NYC offices of the IRS, CIA, DOD, OEM, U.S. Secret Service, and other agencies that might just possibly have had a reason to have certain things "disappear".)

So if WTC7 was "pre-rigged" for demolition, it is not such a great leap of logic to suggest that WTC 1 and 2 were also pre-rigged.

There remain an enormous number of unanswered questions about 9/11, and what exactly occurred in NYC, DC and PA. Was it a case of government "negligence?" Or was it "allowed" to happen? Or was it actually "made" to happen?

Is this idea too "cynical?" Consider that Bush is willing to appoint to the head of FEMA - the agency which has primary reponsible for disaster response - a person who had zero qualifications for the job. This makes Michael Brown - and, by turn, George Bush - complicit in the deaths in New Orleans that might have been prevented by quicker, more organized action on the part of FEMA. [N.B. As a friend pointed out to me today, I spent 10 years in event management, four years on a municipal planning committee, and three years as the VP of the police-citizen liaison council in my community. That makes me far more qualified to head FEMA than a former horse judge who lied about his background.]

If Bush is cynical enough to appoint a "buddy" with no experience to a position that is responsible for people's lives, it would seem to be a very short step to believing that 9/11 was not what the "official story" would have us believe.

Start opening your eyes, waking up, and smelling the coffee. It may frighten you, but "the truth will make you free."

Peace.

  Attacks' Legacy: Simmering Fear
Nagging Feelings of Vulnerability and Unease About the Future Remain

Diane Rokos of Rosslyn still eyeballs inbound jetliners to make sure their landing gear are down. The hijacked airplanes, she seems to recall, were bound for destruction with their wheels up.

Scott Smit of Falls Church still has a two-week stash of food and water in his garage, an escape plan and a family rendezvous point in the Blue Ridge mountains.

Dawn Caskie of McLean still checks out every person boarding the airplane when she flies and keeps a road atlas in her car in case she has to flee an attack.

Four years and multiple catastrophes after Sept. 11, 2001, mental health experts and area residents say that although 9/11 might seem eclipsed by other events and forgotten by the public, its complex of fear remains just beneath the surface -- ready to trigger instantly.

Shoes still must come off in airport security lines, although booties often are available for those who don't want their feet to get dirty.

Metro riders who once abided by an unspoken code to keep their eyes straight ahead now scan one another warily, urged by disembodied announcements to watch, mostly in vain, for sinister activity and packages.

"I hate it," said Sandy Green of the District. "It is very un-Metro. Everybody [usually] sticks to themselves very, very carefully. And we have to be nosy now."

Signs along the interstates command: "Report Suspicious Activity." False alarms proliferate. Fighters are scrambled to pursue stray Cessnas. The Capitol is evacuated. The threat level is adjusted up, then down.

And real disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina, seem to trigger the anxiety anew.
