This is just the beginning.  As noted in a recent e-mail, I am betting that the Bush Administration finds a way - legally or otherwise - to weaken or eliminate the "posse comitatus" provision of the Constitution, thus allowing the U.S. military to carry out "specific" actions within the U.S.

  * Constitutional Contradictions. The US Constitution guarantees citizens the right to a "writ of habeas corpus " which up until now has prevented government authorities from detaining a person indefinitely without charges and guaranteed that no one can be imprisoned without a trial. This dates from the British common law. But last week, in Washington and London, both Bush and Blair were trying to repeal habeas corpus rights. The US Senate, overturning a US Supreme Court decision, voted narrowly to allow the government to hold prisoners in Guantanamo without allowing them the right to challenge their imprisonment. In London, the House of Commons had more sense, rejecting PM Blair's demand that he be given the power to jail persons for 90 days without charges. All this in the name of "defending" our freedoms against "terrorism".
