DEMOCRATS BLAST BUSH FOR DEFIANT WAR SPEECH ON VETERANS DAY
WebPosted Fri Nov 11 13:19:53 2005

---Democrats have condemned U.S. President George W. Bush for making a
speech on Veterans Day in support of his administration's war in Iraq.

"I wish President Bush knew better than to dishonour America's veterans
by playing the politics of fear and smear on Veterans Day," said
Democratic Senator John Kerry, who ran unsuccessfully against Bush last
year. Kerry is also a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Bush's speech Friday at the Tobyhanna Army Depot in Pennsylvania defended
the war and attacked his critics.

"We will never give in," said Bush. "We will never accept anything less
than complete victory."

The president's comments came just before the U.S. military announced
that five more U.S. soldiers had been killed in Iraq. The Associated
Press says that means the Iraq war has claimed the lives of 2,061
U.S. soldiers.

Bush underlined the need to fight the "war on terror" and warned of a
movement to establish a radical Muslim empire around the world.

He singled out Syria for criticism and said it "must stop exporting
violence and start importing democracy."

Edward Kennedy, another Democratic senator, said it was "deeply
regrettable" Bush used the day to make a "campaign-like" speech.

Bush alluded to recent controversies concerning misleading intelligence
about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

"The stakes in the global war on terror are too high and the national
interest is too important for politicians to throw out false charges."

Bush is facing increased scrutiny of the intelligence used to argue in
favour of a war in Iraq. Democrats in Congress are claiming the Bush
administration manipulated intelligence to mislead the country into
supporting the war.

Their campaign got more life from the indictment of Lewis
(Scooter) Libby, who resigned Oct. 28 as an aide to U.S. Vice-
President Dick Cheney.

vows to 'clear his good name'

The investigation continues to examine the role of Bush's top political
strategist, Karl Rove.
