Effective grassroots efforts to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast:

Please forward these sites to everyone you know!
And please let me know if you have others that should be added to this list

Community Labor United - CLU: a coalition of community groups that for 9 years
has worked in what are now the hardest-hit neighborhoods of New Orleans and
is calling for grassroots oversight of the relief process, while
federal funds are funneled into rebuilding casinos, hotels,
chemical plants, etc. Go to http://cluonline.live.radicaldesigns.org/?page_id=3
or make checks out to People's Hurricane Relief Fund
Vanguard Public Foundation
383 Rhode Island St, Ste 301
San Francisco, CA 94103

The Peace development Fund has set up a Gulf Coast Renewal Fund to
support communties and organizations in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama,
and now east Texas with a major focus on ensuring that the voices of
those most impacted are at the table when rebuilding decisions are made.
To donate, visit http://www.peacedevelopmentfund.org/donors/-donor.htm
(a secure donation site) or contact Ray Santiago at 510-435-8130 or
ray at peacefund.org <mailto:ray at peacefund.org>. Checks earmarked for the
Gulf Coast Renewal Fund should be made out to the Peace Development Fund
and mailed to:
Peace Development Fund
ATTN: Gulf Coast Renewal Fund
PO Box 1280
Amherst, MA 01004

The Katrina Information Network (KIN) serves as an information and
ACTION clearinghouse with voices and organizations from the communities
that have been devastated by Katrina. They stand for Real Relief and A
Just Recovery. Their site is:
www.KatrinaAction.org

Veterans for Peace are collecting and delivering things like baby items,
water, cleaning supplies, canned goods and getting them to the people who
need them in the New Orleans area.
They also need volunteers. Go to http://www.vfproadtrips.org/
or send donations at
Saving Our Selves (SOS)
Mobile Baptist Sunlight District Auditorium
809 Seminary St
Pritchard, AL 36610
251-377-9691

These are recommended by Van Jones, national executive director of the
Ella Baker Center for Human Rights(he also recommends CLU above):
Mississippi Workers Center at http://www.msworkerscenter.org/
Southern Empowerment Project at http://www.southernempowerment.org/index.html.
Project South at http://www.projectsouth.org/upcoming_events/abandonment.htm
He says, "Let's insist that New Orleans be rebuilt - under the direction of those
who have lived there for generations, not at the behest of big developers or
carpet-bagging profiteers like Halliburton."

Recommended by Arthur Waskow of The Shalom Center(he also recommends CLU above):
ACORN and Tides Foundation Rapid Response Fund are working together to help rebuild the
Gulf region at http://www.tidesfoundation.org/RR_0905.cfm
Louisiana Environmental Network http://www.leanweb.org
A Hurricane Katrina Recovery and Redevopment Fund through
http://www.shefafund.org/contribute.asp

also go to http://katrina.mayfirst.org/ for more info on grassroots,
low income, people of color led hurrican relief organizations.

Louisiana Local Aid Project (LLAP) of Western Mass
To relieve and support rural towns in Western Louisiana,
checks can be made out to Katrina Fund, Hibernia National Bank, 919 Main St,
Elton,LA 70532. This is a local effort of Western Massachusetts residents
to help small towns in Western Louisiana that have taken in large numbers
of evacuees from Katrina. Elaine Ulman of W Mass has relatives living in
this area and is in direct contact with what the schools and evacuees need.
Western Mass is also sending down volunteers to help.
Contacts are Elaine Ulman at lenahamp at earthlink.net and Pastor Jake Crowell,
First Baptist Church, Elton, LA, 337-584-2341

We've got to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf coast from the bottom up
because Halliburton
and FEMA are doing it top down. Just imagine - Karl Rove is in charge of
this reconstruction! See the Common Dreams article (from the Washington Times)
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/0930-07.htm "HUD Chief Foresees a 'Whiter'
Big Easy". This is just the tip of the iceberg regarding what the Bush administration
has in store for New Orleans and the Gulf Area. bThere's a lot at stake here.
