Michael:

Yes, war for oil. But Iraq is only a smokescreen - albeit a legitimate
piece of the puzzle. The real action is Afghanistan and, more importantly,
Ukbekistan. Keep in mind that the Caspian Sea Basin holds the world's
largest untapped oil supply (~220 BILLION barrels), and the area around it
holds the world's largest untapped natural gass supply (~1 TRILLION cubic
feet). The only way to get the oil and natural gas out is by pipeline. And
that pipeline has to run through Afghanistan. Uzbekistan is a crucial piece
here due not only to its strategic location near the Caspian Sea Basin, but
because it is the "strongest" of the countries surrounding that basin. It
is not a coincidence that fighting has broken out in Uzbekistan of late, or
that things are heating up again in Afghanistan.

Take a look at a map of the countries and wider area surrounding the Caspian
Sea Basin. You can almost predict world affairs - and especially U.S.
actions - based on that map.

Peace.
