Frequently Asked Questions about the Mb-Civic Lists

The Mb-Civic list is an email mailing list for the purpose of discussing
politics, current events, and related issues, and for posting articles of
interest on these topics. Members send articles and comments in an email,
which is then sent out to the entire membership.

Changing Account Settings

There are many settings on your subscription that you can change, such as
your password, whether you get the list in Regular Format (each individual
post comes as a separate email) or Digest Format (you receive the posts
bundled into one or two emails a day), or to temporarily stop delivery of
the list when you wish to stay subscribed, but want no mail to come from the
list for a period of time, such as when you go on vacation. To change any of
these setting go to:

http://www.islandlists.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mb-civic

Enter your email address under the section “Mb-Civic Subscribers” to go to
the first of your settings page. Enter your password in the box indicated
and go to your second settings page. Here you will find sections, with
explanations, to change many of your account settings.

Forgot your password?

Go to: http://www.islandlists.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mb-civic Enter
your email address under the section “Mb-Civic Subscribers” to go to the
first of your settings page. There you will find a button to click to have a
password reminder sent to you.

Bounces

Each account is allowed 5 bounces (emails sent out from the list that are
bounced back to our server as undeliverable) before your account becomes
temporarily disabled, meaning no emails get sent out until the account is
reactivated. If you have a limit on your email account it can be wise to put
your account on hold when you go on vacation, or will be away from your
computer, for any length of time, in order to avoid bounces. This can be
done through the account settings page online, as described above, where you
can also reactivate your account when you wish emails to start coming
again.. If you believe your account has become inactivated due to excessive
bounces, please contact the moderator to reactivate it.

Posting to the list

To post to the Mb-Civic List send your email to mb-civic at islandlists.com It
will be sent out to all of the subscribers of the list.

Please note the following:

You can only post from the email address you are subscribed at.

The email address mb-civic at islandlists.com must be visible in the “To” or
the “CC” fields of your email. Emails where the list address is a Blind
Carbon Copy, or as part of a larger mailing list which does not show the
addresses, get stopped by the filters and must be OK’ed by the moderator
before they go out to the list. Please make sure the list address is
visible.

Posts larger than 100K in size must be checked and authorized by the
moderator.

All posts to the list must be sent in plain text, and not in html. The
software we use to archive the posts does not accept any html, nor do some
email programs, therefore we ask that all post be in plain text only.

Attachments

Attachments are allowed on the Mb-Civic List. However, html attachments are
not archived in the list archives, and cannot be read by some of our
subscribers, so please send all text attachments as plain text. Other types
of attachments (jpg, etc.) are accepted.
List Archives

Like many mailing lists, the Mb-Civic list archives its posts online. You
can view the archived posts to the list (sorted by Thread, Author, Subject,
or Date) by going to:

http://www.islandlists.com/pipermail/mb-civic/

Only the posts from July 2004 forward are available. All posts to the list
prior to July 2004 were lost in a server crash. Please Note: As all the
posts to the list are archived online it is unwise to include in a post your
phone number, address, or any other personal information that you wouldn't
want published online.

Editors

Certain list members have been designated, by the list owner, as editors,
and assigned to send articles of interest from specific publications that
they read regularly. List members are also free to send other articles from
these same publications if they feel an article of interest has been
overlooked by the editor. If there is a publication that you feel is not
regularly represented on the list, and you would like to be the editor of
that publication for the list send an email to the moderator (see below) who
will check with the list owner and get back to you.
Behavior

It is to be expected that in discussions people will not always agree with
each other. Discussion of differing opinions is encouraged on the list, and
one is always free to state one’s position, and go into reasons and
explanations for holding that opinion. However, it is expected that people
will express their opinions in a way that does not insult the person with
whom they are disagreeing. No personal insults will be tolerated on the
list. If a member’s conduct does not live up to these standards in the
opinion of the list owner or moderator, they will be given an official
warning. If any member accumulates a third warning they will be unsubscribed
from the list.

Members are encouraged to acknowledge that their posts are their opinions
only, and to not state their opinion as fact.

When a thread gets off topic or becomes a personal discussion, and is
potentially not of interest to the entire list, it is expected that the
parties will take their discussion to private email and not continue it on
the list.
