Ian,
My memory is that it was very close and the riots tipped the scales.
I did everything I could to try to convince Mayor Daley and Governor Kerner
that they were being set up by the Yippies. They couldn't conceive it
happening in Chicago.
Quite a story.

I'm not so sure I would agree that the riots in 1968 "gave us Richard
Nixon."  I think Nixon's election was a foregone conclusion even without
those riots.  The riots were certainly a stupid move, but I'm not sure there
was a causal relationship - or even a specific connection - between them and
Nixon's victory.
