U.S. CAN'T ACCOUNT FOR MILLIONS SPENT IN IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN
WebPosted Wed Apr 13 18:14:41 2005

WASHINGTON---David Walker, a top investigator for the U.S. Congress, says
that the Defence Department is unable to track how it spent tens of
millions of dollars in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Walker is the comptroller for the Government Accountability Office a non-
partisan audit and investigative arm.

On Wednesday, he told the Senate armed services committee that the
Defence Department doesn't have a system to determine how the U.S. spent
tens of millions in war-related emergency funds set aside by Congress. He
said trying to find out is like "pulling teeth."

Congress approved $25 billion in extra defence spending for fiscal 2005
and was moving to approve $81 billion more this week.

The Defence Department has made no immediate comment on the charges.
