The September, 2004, issue of Harpers Magazine has a formidable and
enlightening cover story: "Tentacles of Rage: The Republican
Propaganda Mill, A Brief History." There's an octopus on the cover. The
story has been written by the editor-in-chief, Lewis Lapham. The
history actually covers from the 70s until now. This is not yet
available electronically. The magazine's web site is www.harpers.org/

Here's a quote from the article when it discusses the formation and
funding of think tanks for generating books and articles and ideas for
promulgating the Republican message:

The pamphlets, histories, monographs, and background briefings intended
to bring about the ruin of the liberal idea in all of its
institutionalized forms—the demonization of the liberal press, the
disparagement of liberal sentiment, the destruction of liberal
education—and by the time Ronald Reagan arrived in triumph at the White
House in 1980, the assembly lines were operating at full capacity."
