U.S., Allies Fail to Slow Nuclear Arms Programs, NYT Reports
Aug. 7 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President George W. Bush's diplomatic initiatives
with European and Asian allies have failed to curb North Korea's and Iran's
nuclear weapons programs, the New York Times said, citing U.S. intelligence
officials and outside experts.
A report concluded that tightened sanctions and several rounds of talks
involving four of North Korea's neighbors haven't deterred its attempts to
develop plutonium weapons, the paper said in a story published online for
tomorrow's edition. The report by U.S. intelligence experts was commissioned
by the Bush administration earlier this year, the newspaper said.
Robert Gates, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency under former
President George H.W. Bush, said during last week's Aspen Institute
conference on nuclear terrorism that Iran is trying to produce enriched
uranium while staying within its treaty obligations, the paper reported.
The U.S. is pursuing ways to increase covert actions to disrupt or slow the
weapons programs, the paper said, citing unidentified administration and
intelligence officials. Bush has said he wouldn't ``tolerate'' North Korea
or Iran having nuclear weapons.
